Background
Established in June 1991 by Gordon Darling AC CMG to provide assistance to the Australian visual arts through Public Institutions, Australia-wide, the Gordon Darling Foundation was the first foundation in Australia to focus specifically on support for the visual arts.
Since then, over 1000 grants have been awarded for a variety of visual arts projects including catalogues, professional development, exhibition development, art publications, research projects, symposia, and collection management initiatives.
The Gordon Darling Foundation also funds:
- The Darling Travel Grant program – grants providing travel opportunities for staff from Australian Institutions. The grants fund a focused trip which benefits both the individual travelling and their art gallery or museum. Grants are provided for domestic and international travel.
- The Museum Leadership Program – intensive residential professional development courses for senior museum managers. Held in association with Museums Galleries Australia.
- The Digitisation of Collections program - grants continue to be awarded to galleries to assist them to provide on-line access to Australian visual arts collections.
